Editorial Review for 31st. Street Pub – by Moe Stevens

The Scene
The former biker bar no longer has rooms dedicated to panties and human heads; but the large collection of grinning skulls and mirrors painted with beer names (enough to stock a drunken fun house) still shock and amaze. A recently renovated bar allows even more of the music- and drink-hungry to pack in and listen to local and out-of-town bands while sipping drafts of Iron City poured from a vintage '50s gas pump behind the bar.

The Draw

From punkers to indie kids to tattooed bikers, the diverse crowd is usually between 21 and 45, and it comes to hear the banging music. Don't dress to impress. Though it's one of the very few clubs still dedicated to rock music, showcasing punk, indie pop and hardcore, be prepared to hear just about anything when you walk through the door.

Know Before You Go

If you're smoke-sensitive, stay home. This place is quite possibly the smokiest place in Pittsburgh.

The Extras

On the anniversary of Frank Zappa's birthday, the pub holds an annual celebration with an evening of Zappa tunes, videos and stories.

i like this place for the music, but the owner joel is an unfriendly, angry dweeb. i went to a reunion show with shape of rage, battered citizens, and some of the guys from half life....it ROCKED! joel the owner is always bitter though. he scowled at me and critiqued my motorcycle..because it wasnt up to his "caliber". while i think this place is just OK, it's NO electric bananna! now Johnny & Judy knew what they were doin'!!!!

Pros: music

Cons: the owner is too angry & unfriendly

The bands freaking rock, I was stoked all throughout the night. The beer specials got me faded super quick and cheap.

Despite reinventing itself, this pub still wears the shadows and scars of its previous life as badges of honor.  See the full editorial review.
