Editorial Review for Gateway Center Plaza – by Tom Straw
The Scene
OGC differs from Market and Mellon Squares in three major ways: First, there are refreshingly few pigeons. Second, the landscaping involves plenty of grass, petunias and miniature roses rather than creative uses of concrete and other mixed substances. Finally, OGC is not a square but rather an "L" shape, with an impressive fountain at the juncture. By midsummer, the sycamore trees lining both sides of the walkways are leafed fully and stretching out to one another, creating a natural canopy and a cool, shady environment.
The Atmosphere
Plan on packing a lunch, because the only nearby restaurants are the (usually) over-crowded Promenade Café at the Pittsburgh Hilton and the drab, underground Gateway Cafeteria. Or better yet, if lunchers work in the Grant Street/Fifth and Forbes areas of town, they should grab something at a takeout place and stroll over.
