Editorial Review for Pittsburgh Public Theater – by Ron Kaplan
The History
Founded by Joan Apt, Margaret Rieck and Ben Shaktman in 1974, at the low-ebb of the local theater scene, the Public Theater was housed for 24 seasons at the Hazlett Theater, formerly the Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall on the North Side.
The Space
Last December, the Public moved to the O'Reilly Theater, downtown. Designed by the internationally famous architect Michael Graves, the O'Reilly is an intimate 650-seat theater with a "thrust" seating configuration--the audience surrounds three sides of the stage.
The Shows
The Public produces a variety of different types of productions and considers itself a "terrific generalist." Some of its more noteworthy recent productions include August Wilson's world premiere of "King Hedley II," "Betty's Summer Vacation" and "Hysteria."
